Gaafu Alifu Atoll is traditionally called Northern Huvadhu Atoll and is located between latitude 0° 28' N and 0° 10' N. It is situated to the south of the "One and a Half Degree Channel". Ten of the 82 islands in Gaafu Alifu Atoll are inhabited and Viligili, with a population of around 3,000, is the administrative capital of the atoll.
Gaafu Alifu atoll was declared an administrative division of the Maldives on 8 February 1962 when the larger Huvadhu Atoll was divided into two separate districts. Gaafu Alifu corresponds to the north-eastern section of the natural atoll, north of the line extending between the channels of Footukandu and Vaarulu Kandu. Geographically, the main Huvadhu Atoll is the second largest atoll in the world, measuring 70km long and 55km wide, and covering an area of 2,240sqkm. There are more than 250 islands in the atoll and innumerable reefs and sandbanks.
