Haa Alifu Atoll is located at the extreme northern end of the Maldives.
Haa Alifu Atoll contains a total of 42 islands, 16 of which are inhabited. Dhidhoo is the capital island of the atoll which has a population of around 19,300. There are also three resorts located in the atoll, but as tourist resorts are not considered inhabited islands they are included in the list of uninhabited islands in the region. The relatively simple names such as Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu are actually code letters taken from the Dhivehi Alphabet and assigned to the divisions. They are rarely used by locals to refer to the atolls of the Maldives, but have become popular in recent years among tourists and foreigners who find them easier to pronounce than the traditional names.
Haa Alifu Atoll is accessible by a 45-minute domestic flight from Malé International Airport to Hanimaadhoo, which is located in South Thiladhunmathi Atoll. From the airport, it takes a 15-minute speedboat ride to reach the islands of Haa Alifu Atoll itself.
