Noonu Atoll is the southernmost sector of the larger natural atoll in the northern area of the Maldives archipelago that has been divided into four smaller divisions for administrative reasons. The other administrative atolls that make up the rest of the main geographical atoll are Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani atolls.
Traditionally known as South Miladhunmadulu Atoll or South Miladhunmadulu, Noonu Atoll is located between 5° 58' N and 5° 38' N. The relatively simple names such as Haa Alifu and Noonu are actually code letters taken from the Dhivehi Alphabet and assigned to the divisions. They are rarely used by locals to refer to the atolls of the Maldives, but have become popular in recent years among tourists and foreigners who find them easier to pronounce than the traditional names.
