Seenu Atoll, or Addu atoll as it is popularly and traditionally known in the Maldives, is located between latitude 0° 36' S and 0° 44' S south of the equator. The administrative capital of the atoll is Hithadhoo which has a population upward of 15,000. The atoll, together with Fuvahmulah located 30km north of Addu Atoll, extend the Maldives into the Southern Hemisphere. Addu Atoll is located approximately 478km south of Malé. Until the reign of Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen II, Addu Atoll was a part of Addumulah, one of the 13 administrative divisions in the ancient Maldives, which comprised the atoll and its neighbouring atoll Fuvahmulah.
