Shaviyani Atoll, also known as Miladhunmadulu Uthuruburi and Northern Miladhunmadulu Atoll, is an administrative division of the Maldives which is wedged between Haa Dhaalu Atoll to the North and Noonu Atoll to the south in a long stretch of islands consisting of over 200 islands in the four northernmost atolls of the Maldives.
This administrative division is 37 miles long, the third such atoll from the northern edge of the country, and is assigned the Maldivian letter 'Shaviyani'. The relatively simple names such as Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu are actually code letters taken from the Dhivehi Alphabet and assigned to the divisions. They are rarely used by locals to refer to the atolls of the Maldives, but have become popular in recent years among tourists and foreigners who find them easier to pronounce than the traditional names.
The atoll comprises of 51 islands of which 16 are inhabited. In 2003, the population of the atoll crossed 14,000, and is now estimated to be around 14,500.
